I’ve only spent a day at a time in Connecticut for some day trips, but, like their state slogan proclaims, it was full of surprises. To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect when I went to CT for the first time, but was pleasantly surprised at how gorgeous it was! I have been to Fairfield and Stamford to visit friends and see the Universities out there and was just in love with how beautiful both cities were. From where I live in White Plains, the trip to Stamford is only a 15 minute drive, and 20 to Fairfield. I think it’s a great way to get away for a bit but not travel too far or worry about how to even get there, since a train ride would also be very fast.
Fairfield University is a gorgeous campus, set in the sleepy little beach town of Fairfield. Fairfield itself reminded me a lot of Stars Hollow, for all of you Gilmore Girls fans out there. Everyone was friendly, there were adorable little private shops from boutiques to cafes lining the streets, and the street names all had water-themed names like Reef Road and Beach Place. While Fairfield was a beautiful little town, its population was definitely a generation older than me and filled with young families. I can say that it would surely be a great town to raise a family. Even though it was quiet, there was still a lot to do there to have fun.
I recently was in Stamford visiting friends I studied abroad with who just moved there. This city also surprised me. To be honest, it reminded me a lot of White Plains, NY! It was a a small city, but still had a bigger city feel. It was very walkable, there were tons of stores ranging from Target to an indie film movie theater to, of course (if you’ve ever been to White Plains or Stamford) TONS of great restaurants. We walked from my friend’s apartment building which was less than a half a mile outside of the city center to the main streets where all the action was. I loved (and love about WP) being able to easily walk places but without any big city worries (you know, like getting lost or mugged.)
We walked around Stamford and stopped in different little stores, and then ate a great dinner with some amazing margaritas at BarTaco. I would really suggest anything on their menu because we all ended up sharing different tacos. The chicken, beef, and shrimp tacos were delicious, and we also split a noodle bowl, along with a pitcher of fabulously tasty margaritas!
To sum it up, if you’re looking for a small getaway or a fun day trip, CT would be the place to go! You’ll never be bored because there are so many shops and restaurants to walk to, and, not to mention, you’ll be in a beautiful and clean setting, you’ll forget you’re only a few minutes away from where you came from (if you live in downstate, NY, that is.)
