Aspen is one of my favorite towns in the United States. In fact, I would hope that one day I could live there! It just got even better in my eyes when I read about Aspen Skiing Company’s new environmentalist initiative. The Denver Post reported the news on November 12th, that the company has partnered with a coal mine to produce methane power.
This project is revolutionary as it is the nation’s first such project on such a large scale, that converts waste methane into 24 million kilowatt hours of power. That’s enough to fuel all of Aspen Skiing’s four ski areas (Ajax, Buttermilk, Highlands, and Snowmass Mountains,) as well as 13 restaurants and three hotels!
This project unites unlikely partners: one of the world’s biggest coal companies and the ski industry’s greenest, most environmentally focused resort owner, and hopes to inspire other coal mines to follow suit.
